Customized to your specifications:  An RV solar battery charging systems requires more than just solar panels.  Before you start building a custom system and purchasing components, we recommend that you read through our DIY Instructions topics to familiarize yourself with the technologies we use, and learn why our combination of components results in the most reliable and efficient systems.  The steps below will guide you through the SunRunner configuration process:

1.  Determine which and how many panels will be in your system.  After reading the System Sizing sections on the RV Solar Education page, you’ll be able to decide how many solar panels will be ideal for your camping lifestyle. Next, determine the available roof space on your RV to support that wattage.  Start by studying the different sizes of Solar Panels and determine which models will fit within your available roof spaces. Keep in mind that you want to avoid shade wherever possible when selecting solar panel mounting locations and remember that not all of your solar panels have to be the same model in order for your system to perform efficiently.  All of our Solar Panel Kits come with appropriate mounting hardware and cable assemblies.  Once you’ve determined your solar panel type, quantity and orientation, you can move on to step 2.

2.  Select appropriate SunRunner System Cores(s).  Each SunRunnerTM System Core includes a complete wire harness and fuse kit to go from your roof to the Charge Controller and on to the battery bank.  Select a core (or cores) that can handle the wattage you determined in step 1.  Your system may require multiple cores if you have many solar panels.  Also, if you think you may want to expand the size of your system in the future, keep your options open by making sure the charge controller in your selected core(s) can support additional solar panels. In each of our SunRunner System Cores we’ve carefully matched the charge controller with a correctly sized wire harness so you don’t have to worry about any of those details. Once you’ve chosen the appropriate System Core you can move on to step 3.

3.  Choose a Combiner Box.  Now it’s time to decide how you are going to route the solar output wire down from your roof to where you’ll be mounting the charge controller inside the RV.  Some wire-runs go down through the refrigerator vent, and others enter through a penetration in the roof. This is where the Combiner Box comes into play.  All of the output wires from your solar panels will terminate in a combiner box installed somewhere on the roof. The heavier gauge system core wire harness will then go from the combiner box to your charge controller first, then on to your batteries. Plan this wire path carefully, then re-think it to make sure it’s the best solution.  Bear in mind that the shorter the wire-runs, the more efficient your system will be.
