Solar Panels & Solar Panel Kits

AM Solar offers a wide variety of solar panels and solar panel kits to meet a wide range of applications.  Our solar panels are primarily Noir, Zamp Solar, Rich Solar, and ACO Power branded.  We sell raw solar panels, just the panel by itself, or panel kits which may include mounts and specialized wire harnesses.  Small solar panels are ideal for tight spaces on Airstream trailers and truck campers.  Long-skinny solar panels work great on vans and Airstreams.  Larger panels, which cost the same to mount as smaller panels, are a great choice when roof space is available.

The mount sets in our RV solar panel kits use our proprietary Rocker Mount design with non-penetrating VHB tape adhesion.  Depending on the application, we have wire harness suited for series or parallel configurations.  These wire harnesses can terminate in a variety of adapters to match the AM Solar Combiner box, SAE connectors, ATP connectors, and MC-4 type connectors.

A solar panel kit is one of many components in an off-grid solar system. Solar panels provide a steady charging to battery banks when exposed to sunlight.  They are ideal for offsetting the consumption of appliances and small electronics. Most power systems require several solar panels. For example, to offset a residential refrigerator, we recommend a minimum of 400W of solar panels.

Solar panel kits vary in panel size, mounting hardware, output, and wire harness.  Select the options that fit on your roof, have appropriate mounts, have output that is compatible with your system, and have a wire harness that will match your receptacle.

We recommend pairing our solar panel kits with our Complete Solar Charger, Inverter/Charger, and Lithium Battery kits in order to get an off-grid ready RV power system.

Solar Panels & Solar Panel Kits: Frequently Asked Questions

  • What Are Solar Panels and Solar Panel Kits for RVs?

Solar panels for RVs are photovoltaic (PV) panels designed to convert sunlight into electricity. Solar panel kits for RVs typically include solar panels, a charge controller, wiring, and sometimes an inverter and battery. These kits are tailored to meet the unique needs of mobile energy use in RVs, providing a renewable power source while on the move.

  • Why Should I Consider Solar Panels for My RV?

Solar panels offer several benefits for RV users:

-Cost-Effective: After the initial investment, solar panels reduce or eliminate the need for external electricity sources.

-Convenience: They allow for off-grid camping (boondocking) without relying on generators.

-Quiet Operation: Unlike generators, solar panels operate silently.

-Low Maintenance: Solar panels require minimal upkeep.

How Do I Choose the Right Solar Panel Kit for My RV?

Choosing the right solar panel kit involves several considerations:

-Power Needs: Calculate your daily power usage and choose a kit that meets or exceeds this requirement.

-Panel Type: Choose between monocrystalline, polycrystalline, or thin-film panels based on efficiency, cost, and space constraints.

-Kit Components: Ensure the kit includes all necessary components like a charge controller, appropriate cabling, and mounting hardware.

-Budget: Factor in your budget while considering long-term benefits and durability.

  • Monocrystalline vs. Polycrystalline: Which is Best for RVs?

-Monocrystalline Panels: Offer the highest efficiency and require less space, but are generally more expensive.

-Polycrystalline Panels: Cheaper than monocrystalline but slightly less efficient and require more space.

  • How Much Power Can I Generate with RV Solar Panels?

The power output depends on several factors:

-Panel Efficiency and Size: Higher efficiency and larger panels generate more power.

-Sunlight Availability: More sunlight equates to more power generation.

-Geographical Location: Locations closer to the equator receive more sunlight.

-Season: Solar power output is higher in summer than in winter.

  • Can I Run My RV Air Conditioner on Solar Power?

Running an RV air conditioner on solar power is possible but requires a substantial solar setup with sufficient battery storage and a robust inverter. You’ll need to calculate the air conditioner’s power requirements and ensure your solar system can meet this demand, especially considering the high initial surge power needed.

  • How Do I Install Solar Panels on My RV?

Installation typically involves:

-Mounting the panels on the RV roof.

-Wiring the panels to a charge controller.

-Connecting the charge controller to the RV batteries.

Installing an inverter if AC power is needed.

-It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s instructions or consult a professional installer.

  • What Maintenance Do RV Solar Panels Require?

Maintenance is minimal:

-Regular cleaning to remove dirt, leaves, or snow that can block sunlight.

-Inspect for damage, especially after severe weather.

-Ensure connections remain tight and corrosion-free.

  • Are RV Solar Panels Effective in Cloudy or Rainy Conditions?

Solar panels can still generate electricity in cloudy or rainy conditions, but their efficiency decreases. The exact reduction in power output depends on the cloud cover density and the type of solar panel used.

  • How Do I Store Energy Generated by Solar Panels in My RV?

The energy generated by solar panels is typically stored in batteries. The type of battery (lead-acid, AGM, lithium-ion) will affect storage capacity and efficiency.

  • What Size Inverter Do I Need for My RV Solar Panel System?

The size of the inverter depends on the total wattage of appliances you plan to run simultaneously. Add up the wattage of these appliances and choose an inverter with a higher wattage rating to ensure it can handle the load.

  • Can I Expand My RV Solar Panel System Later?

Yes, many RV solar systems are designed to be expandable. You can add more panels and upgrade components like the charge controller and batteries as needed. However, ensure all components are compatible when expanding.

  • How Do Solar Panel Kits Integrate with Existing RV Electrical Systems?

Solar panel kits typically integrate into the RV electrical system through the battery bank. The charge controller regulates the flow of power from the solar panels to the batteries, and the inverter converts DC power from the batteries to AC power for use in the RV.

  • Do I Need a Special Charge Controller for My RV Solar Panel System?

Yes, a charge controller is essential to prevent overcharging and damaging the batteries. There are two main types:

-PWM (Pulse Width Modulation): More affordable but less efficient, suitable for smaller systems.

-MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking): More expensive but significantly more efficient, especially in varied weather conditions.

  • What are the Legal or Regulatory Considerations for Installing Solar Panels on an RV?

Regulatory considerations typically involve:

-Vehicle Weight: Ensure the solar system does not exceed the RV’s weight capacity.

-Panel Placement: Panels should not obstruct visibility or extend beyond the perimeter of the RV.

-Electrical Codes: Adhere to local electrical codes and standards.

  • Can I Use Solar Panels While Driving?

Yes, solar panels can charge your RV’s batteries while driving, provided they are securely mounted and connected.

  • What Impact Does Orientation and Tilt Have on Solar Panel Efficiency?

The orientation and tilt of the panels can significantly impact efficiency. Panels should ideally face south in the Northern Hemisphere and be tilted to catch maximum sunlight, especially in winter.
