The electrical system of an off-grid tiny home is very similar to that of an RV with the following exceptions:  there is no alternator charging, shore power is a generator, and the roof surface for mounting panels is typically metal or asphalt shingles.  To simplify the design process we have created three grades of complete kits with everything from the charge regulating devices to the outlets.  These kits can be purchased as single items, or used as inspiration to help guide you with the configuration of a customized kit using the tool at the bottom of this page.

1.  Build the solar array:  Add a quantity of solar panels that will fit on your roof.  As a rough rule of thumb, every 100W of solar will produce about 25Ah (or 300Wh) of charge per day.  All of these panels are compatible with each other in a parallel connection.  We use card board pieces matching the mounted dimensions of the panels to plan our array layouts.  Get one Plug & Strain relief per panel and one Roof C-Box per eight panels.

2.  Add mounts and sealant:  You will need one set of "Z" Bigfoot Mounts per panel, or one Pole Mount Kit per panel, or one Asphalt Shingle Roof Mount kit per every four 170W panels.  If you use the Bigfoot-Z mounts on a metal roof, you will need one tube of sealant per every three solar panels.  You should also have one tube of sealant for the combiner box.  The sealant is used to bury the mount feet of the panels and to seal around the combiner box.

3.  Select the appropriate charge controller core:  Total the wattage of all your solar panels from Step 1. and be sure to select a charge controller core that is rated to handle that wattage.  If your wattage exceeds the largest rating, multiple charge controllers cores can be used, but you will need a combiner box for each core.

4.  Select a battery bank:  If you plan on running high current loads like a microwave, blender, or coffee pot, you will need at least 300Ah of AGM battery capacity.  Beyond that, we try to maintain a ratio of Battery Ah to Solar Wattage of 1 : 0.5 - 2.0, Meaning that a 300Ah battery bank would be a good fit for anywhere between 150W and 600W of solar.  Because weight and size limitations typically aren't as critical in tiny homes, lithium battery banks are rarely used.  Contact AM Solar if you would like an option larger than 400Ah.
