Since AM Solar was incorporated in 2002, we have installed power systems on nearly everything with wheels and quite a few things without wheels.  Here are some of the most popular wheeled recreational vehicles and what we typically put on them.

2022 Mercedes Sprinter

We call them FunHogs.  They drive around the country and soak up all the fun while everyone else watches them on Instagram.  Usually, these vans are enjoyed by just one or two people, visiting hiking hot spots and ski lodges.

Van Conversion Guide: https://amsolar.com/products/solar-van-conversions

Power System Recommendations:

Three LiFeBlue 100Ah Low Temp batteries with a Victron BMV-712 monitor provides 3.84kWh of stored energy.  A chassis warranty compliant, Victron 12|12 30A alternator charging system delivers a steady charge while driving.  Solar charging comes from two Noir 110W panels connected in parallel on a Zamp combiner box down to a Victron SmartSolar MPPT 100/20 charge controller.  A Victron Multiplus 3000VA inverter delivers 120V AC to loads, passes shore power, and can charge the battery bank at 120A.  A Micro-air EasyStart kit allows the air conditioner to be run off-grid.  DC loads are powered through a Victron Battery Protect 65A and a 6-circuit fuse block.

Power System Capabilities:

With a full charge, the 300Ah battery bank will be able to run a 15,000BTU air conditioner for 1.5 hours at full blast, assuming no other loads or charging sources. Equipped with Bluetooth/local head unit battery monitor and inverter remote, you will have full system visibility on things like state of charge and time to go.  This system can also support an induction cooktop, a blender, a microwave, or pretty much any other 120V AC load you might want to put on a van.  An hour of driving per day will generate roughly enough energy to offset the consumption of a typical 12V DC refrigerator.  If the adventure doesn’t call for much driving, the 220W solar array will cover the refrigerator, fans, lights, and small device chargers.

2022 Ford Transit

Like Sprinter owners, Transit owners are also accurately labeled as FunHogs.  Transits are typically easier to work on, especially with high-current alternator chargers.  Transits are enjoyed by weekend warriors and full-timers alike.

Van Conversion Guide: https://amsolar.com/products/solar-van-conversions

Power System Recommendations:

Two LiFeBlue 200Ah Low Temp batteries with a Victron BMV-712 monitor provides 5.12kWh of stored energy.  By using the 175A Consumer Connection Point, our Straight Shot alternator charging kit delivers a powerful charge while driving.  Solar charging comes from two Rich Solar 200W panels connected in parallel on an AM Solar combiner box down to a Victron SmartSolar MPPT 100/30 charge controller.  A Victron Multiplus II 3000VA inverter delivers 120V AC to loads, passes shore power, and can charge the battery bank at 120A.  DC loads are powered through a Victron Battery Protect 220A and a 12-circuit fuse block.

Power System Capabilities:

With a full charge, the 400Ah battery bank will be able to run a typical 12V DC air conditioner for up to 4 hours at full blast, assuming no other loads or charging sources.  Equipped with Bluetooth/local head unit battery monitor and inverter remote, you will have full system visibility on things like state of charge and time to go. This system can also support an induction cooktop, a blender, a microwave, or pretty much any other 120V AC load you might want to put on a van.  An hour of driving per day will generate roughly enough energy to offset the consumption of an air conditioner for an hour and a typical 12V DC refrigerator.  If the adventure doesn’t call for much driving, the 400W solar array will cover most of the loads if air conditioner usage is minimal.

2022 LTV Unity

The 2022 LTV Unity is comfortable, versatile, easy to park, and easy to drive.  These Class B motorhomes are becoming increasingly popular and they also happen to be one of AM Solar’s favorite rigs to work on.

Class B Guide: https://amsolar.com/class-b-motorhomes

Power System Recommendations:

Two LiFeBlue 200Ah Low Temp batteries with a Victron BMV-712 monitor provides 5.12kWh of stored energy.  A Victron 12|12 30A alternator charging system delivers a steady charge while driving.  Solar charging maxes out the roof space with two Noir 100W and two Noir 110W panels connected in parallel on an AM Solar combiner box down to a Victron SmartSolar MPPT 100/30 charge controller.  A Victron Multiplus 3000VA inverter delivers 120V AC to loads, passes shore power, and can charge the battery bank at 120A.  A Micro-air Easy Start kit allows the inverter to run the air conditioner and a Watchdog surge protector prevents dirty power from harming the system.

Power System Capabilities:

With a full charge, the 400Ah battery bank will be able to run a 15,000BTU air conditioner for about 2 hours at full blast, assuming no other loads or charging sources.  Equipped with Bluetooth/local head unit battery monitor and inverter remote, you will have full system visibility on things like state of charge and time to go.  This system can also support an induction cooktop, a blender, a microwave, or pretty much any other 120V AC load you might have in your LTV.  An hour of driving per day will generate roughly enough energy to offset the consumption of a typical 12V DC refrigerator.  While stationary, the 420W solar array will cover the refrigerator, fans, lights, and small appliances.
